Lemonade Activity

Keiki will work together to gather needed lemons to make their own refreshments.

📖 Overview

Students work together to harvest fresh lemons and transform them into homemade lemonade. Through teamwork and hands-on food preparation, keiki learn where food comes from while exploring the value of growing, harvesting, and sharing local resources.

🎯 Learning Objectives

  • Understand that fresh food comes from plants grown in the environment.
  • Practice teamwork and communication through a group relay activity.
  • Explore the process of harvesting and preparing fresh ingredients.
  • Recognize the importance of local food and sustainable growing practices.

🤲 Hands-On Experience

  • Participate in a relay race to harvest one lemon per student.
  • Harvest fresh lemons directly from the tree.
  • Squeeze lemons to make homemade lemonade using natural ingredients.
  • Discuss where food comes from and the importance of growing and caring for plants.

Seed Ball Making

Keiki will learn the process of creating a “seed-ball” and how plants grow.

📖 Overview

Students create their own seed balls while learning how plants grow and why native species are important. Through this hands-on activity, keiki explore the basics of planting and leave with a simple way to help plants grow at home or in their community.

🎯 Learning Objectives

  • Understand the basic stages of a plant’s life cycle.
  • Learn how seed balls can support plant growth.
  • Identify the importance of native plants in HawaiÊ»i.
  • Practice caring for living plants through planting and watering.
  • Build confidence through hands-on environmental stewardship.

🤲 Hands-On Experience

  • Mix clay, soil, and native plant seeds to create individual seed balls.
  • Roll and shape seed balls by hand using natural materials.
  • Plant seed balls in a pot or designated planting area, or take them home to grow.
  • Water newly planted seeds and discuss the conditions plants need to thrive.

Scavenger Hunt

Keiki will be able to identify specific plants and will learn which are native and non-native.

📖 Overview

Students explore the fishpond by searching for a variety of native and non-native plants while observing the colors and natural features around them. This interactive scavenger hunt encourages keiki to connect with nature, strengthen observation skills, and discover the unique biodiversity of the fishpond.

🎯 Learning Objectives

  • Identify a variety of plants found throughout the fishpond.
  • Distinguish between native and non-native plant species.
  • Develop observation and critical thinking skills through exploration.
  • Recognize the diversity of colors, textures, and living things in the natural environment.
  • Build an appreciation for HawaiÊ»i’s ecosystems through hands-on discovery.

🤲 Hands-On Experience

  • Explore the fishpond using a scavenger hunt worksheet and clipboard.
  • Search for and identify plants such as coconut, banana, taro, breadfruit, ti leaf, pickleweed, screwpine, monkeypod, and portia trees.
  • Use dry erase markers to check off or record each plant as it is found.
  • Observe the natural environment and match colors found around the fishpond by drawing what is seen in each color box.
  • Share discoveries and discuss the differences between native and non-native plants.
