Water Quality Activity
Participants will learn the process of testing our waters and what that means for our loko I’a ecosystem.
📖 Overview
Keiki will explore the importance of water quality by collecting samples from different areas of the loko iʻa and testing them for pH, salinity, and turbidity. Through observation and scientific investigation, participants will learn how water conditions influence the health of fish, plants, and the entire ecosystem.
🎯 Learning Objectives
- Understand why water quality is important to a healthy loko iʻa ecosystem.
- Learn what pH, salinity, and turbidity measure.
- Compare water quality from different collection sites.
- Practice making scientific observations and recording data.
- Understand how water conditions affect native aquatic plants and animals.
🤲 Hands-On Experience
- Collect water samples from multiple locations around the fishpond.
- Observe and compare the appearance of each sample.
- Participate in a group discussion about water quality observations.
- Test pH using pH strips and record results.
- Observe and assist with salinity and turbidity testing using Hanna equipment.
- Complete a water quality log with observations and test results.

Lei Making
Historically, making and giving a lei represents love, connection, and welcome. Participants will learn the art of lei-making by gathering local flora, thus grounding the wearer in Hawaiian tradition.
📖 Overview
Keiki will discover the cultural significance of lei while creating their own lei using locally gathered natural materials. Participants will learn that lei symbolize love, connection, celebration, and aloha while practicing traditional techniques and creativity.
🎯 Learning Objectives
- Learn the cultural significance and history of lei in Hawaiʻi.
- Recognize commonly used native and locally grown lei materials.
- Develop fine motor skills through weaving and assembling a lei.
- Understand the values of aloha, gratitude, and connection represented by lei.
- Appreciate Hawaiian traditions through hands-on cultural practice.
🤲 Hands-On Experience
- Gather or select flowers, ferns, ti leaves, and other foliage.
- Learn basic lei poʻo or lei niu construction techniques.
- Use traditional tools and materials to create a personalized lei.
- Practice weaving, tying, and arranging natural materials.
- Wear or gift a completed lei while learning about lei etiquette.

Ä€ina Trivia Bingo
Participants will learn facts about Hawai’i through participating in this trivia/bingo activity.
📖 Overview
Keiki will strengthen their knowledge of Hawaiʻi through a fun and interactive bingo game featuring questions about Hawaiian culture, history, native species, and the natural environment.
🎯 Learning Objectives
- Learn facts about HawaiÊ»i’s culture, history, and environment.
- Reinforce knowledge through interactive gameplay.
- Build listening, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Encourage teamwork, participation, and friendly competition.
- Increase appreciation for Hawaiʻi and its unique ecosystems.
🤲 Hands-On Experience
- Play bingo while answering Hawaiʻi-themed trivia questions.
- Mark answers using dry erase markers or bingo chips.
- Work individually or with teammates to complete bingo patterns.
- Discuss interesting facts learned throughout the game.
- Celebrate completed bingo cards while reviewing key concepts.
